Flight Schools in California

California has some of the best flying weather in the United States, and you can learn on the coast, in farm country or high in the Sierra Nevada. Most of the schools listed here are at Camarillo Airport in Ventura County, where ATP Flight School, Channel Islands Aviation, Camarillo Flight Instruction and Echelon Flight teach everything from first lessons to airline-focused programmes. Skyrider Ultralights trains ultralight and Light Sport pilots from its own hangar on the field.

A few miles up the valley, historic Santa Paula Airport is home to two specialists. CP Aviation is a family-owned business offering flight training and maintenance, and Olmsted Aviation is an aerobatic school for pilots who want to build advanced handling skills.

In the San Francisco East Bay, Pacific States Aviation runs an FAA Part 141 flight training academy alongside its FBO and maintenance shop at Buchanan Field in Concord. Camarillo Airplane, also listed here, looks after maintenance, inspections and repairs at Camarillo.

For something completely different, Truckee Tahoe Airport sits at about 5,900 ft near Lake Tahoe. Truckee Flight Training, Fly Truckee Tahoe and Learn 2 Fly Truckee all teach there, and high-elevation, mountain-aware flying is a big part of what they offer.

Choosing a flight school in California

  • Think about where you want to fly. Learning on the coast at Camarillo is very different from learning at a high-elevation mountain airport like Truckee, where aircraft perform less well on hot days.
  • Ask what kind of training you will get. Some schools focus on airline careers, some on private flying, and others on aerobatics, ultralights or Light Sport aircraft.
  • Visit before you book. Look at the aircraft, meet the instructors and ask how many students they are training at the moment.
  • Ask what the price includes. Aircraft hire, instructor time, fuel, ground school and exam fees are often charged separately.
  • Start with a trial lesson. It is the easiest way to find out whether a school and an instructor suit you.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I learn to fly in California?

The schools listed on AviatorFinds are at Camarillo and Santa Paula in Ventura County, Buchanan Field in Concord in the East Bay, and Truckee Tahoe Airport in the Sierra Nevada. Camarillo has the most choice, with six listings.

Can I learn aerobatics or fly ultralights in California?

Yes. Olmsted Aviation at Santa Paula is an aerobatic flight school, and Skyrider Ultralights at Camarillo trains ultralight and Light Sport pilots.

What is different about learning to fly at Truckee?

Truckee Tahoe Airport is at about 5,900 ft, so aircraft climb more slowly and need more runway, especially on warm days. Schools there build mountain flying and density altitude awareness into their training.

What licence do I need to fly in the US?

Most people train for an FAA Private Pilot certificate. The new sport pilot rules under MOSAIC widen what sport pilots can fly. The FAA explains how to become a pilot and get a student pilot certificate.
