Flight Schools in Arizona

Arizona is one of the busiest places in the United States to learn to fly, and most of the activity is in the Phoenix East Valley. Three airports there are home to the schools on this page: Chandler Municipal Airport, Falcon Field in Mesa and Stellar Airpark in Chandler.

Chandler Municipal has a mix of schools, from airline-focused training with AeroGuard to smaller schools such as Roadrunner Aviation. It is also where Quantum Helicopters trains helicopter pilots. Falcon Field in Mesa has Leopard Aviation, Eastin Aviation and Venture West Flight School, which between them cover everything from a first discovery flight to commercial and instructor ratings. Fly Phoenix at Stellar Airpark specialises in multi-engine training.

The dry desert climate means plenty of flyable days through the year, which is one reason students come from all over the world to train here.

Choosing a flight school in Arizona

  • Think about where you want to end up. Some schools are built around airline careers with fixed programmes, while others let you fly at your own pace for a Private Pilot certificate.
  • Ask about Part 61 and Part 141. These are two FAA routes to the same certificates. Part 141 schools follow an approved syllabus, and Part 61 is usually more flexible.
  • Ask what the price includes. Aircraft rental, instructor time, ground school, checkride fees and housing are often charged separately.
  • Start with a discovery flight. It is the easiest way to find out whether a school and an instructor suit you.
