Avalon Australian International Airshow (23–28 February 2027)

Avalon is the headline event of the Australian aviation calendar. The organisers have confirmed the 2027 dates as 23 to 28 February at Avalon Airport, near Geelong in Victoria. The week opens with three dedicated trade days, and the public programme runs from Friday 26 February to Sunday 28 February.

  • Trade and industry exposition: the organisers expect more than 900 exhibiting companies and over 60,000 industry visitors.
  • Friday Night Alight: the twilight show returns, with aerial displays as the light fades and live entertainment across the site.
  • Saturday and Sunday airshow: two full days of military jets, aerobatics, historic aircraft and ground exhibits.
  • Careers programme: more than 7,000 students took part in 2025.

Avalon is presented by the not-for-profit AMDA Foundation in collaboration with the Royal Australian Air Force. The organisers say tickets go on sale through Ticketek in November 2026. Keep an eye on the official Avalon website if you want a specific day. The last show drew more than 200,000 visitors, so book accommodation in Geelong or Melbourne early.

Hunter Valley Airshow (3–4 April 2027)

Set at Cessnock Airport in the heart of the Hunter Valley wine region, about two hours north of Sydney, the Hunter Valley Airshow pairs a full flying programme with a family day out. According to the official event information:

  • Gates open at 9:00 am and the event closes at 5:00 pm. Flying displays run from late morning to late afternoon (the current schedule says 10:30 am to 4:00 pm).
  • There is no general on-site parking. Free shuttle buses run from off-site car parks and key locations around the region, with details posted closer to the event.
  • Chairs and picnic blankets are encouraged, and some hay-bale seating is provided. Low shelters and umbrellas are fine, but marquees and gazebos are not.
  • Outside food and picnics are not allowed (except for medical needs), but there are free water refill stations and food stalls.
  • Drones are strictly prohibited. Children under six go free.
  • Pilots are welcome to fly in, with GA parking and refuelling. Pre-register your aircraft and tickets with the organisers first.

The show runs rain, hail or shine, so check the forecast.

Wings Over Shellharbour (22–23 May 2027)

Held at Shellharbour Airport on the NSW South Coast, just over an hour south of Sydney, Wings Over Shellharbour drew more than 20,000 visitors in May 2026. According to the official FAQ, the 2027 public airshow runs on 22 and 23 May. Gates are open 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, and flying runs from 10:30 am to 4:30 pm on both days. A free, pre-registered Careers Day for secondary and tertiary students takes place on Friday 21 May.

A trans-Tasman bonus: Classic Fighters Omaka

If you can travel at Easter, New Zealand’s Classic Fighters Omaka Airshow at Blenheim runs from 26 to 28 March 2027. It is a favourite with warbird fans, and the 2027 theme celebrates the Golden Age of aviation of the 1920s and 1930s alongside WWII fighters, with fireworks too.

Airshow tips for Australian conditions

  • Sun and heat. Avalon falls in late summer and there is little natural shade at any of these venues. Bring a broad-brimmed hat, sunscreen and plenty of water (and use the refill stations where provided).
  • Shuttle planning. Hunter Valley has no on-site parking, and big shows like Avalon generate long traffic queues. Allow extra time and follow official transport advice.
  • Hearing protection. Fast jets are loud. The Shellharbour organisers specifically recommend ear protection for younger children.
  • Seating. General admission usually means bringing your own chair or blanket.
