Cornwall packs a lot of variety into one county for anyone who wants to fly. At Cornwall Airport Newquay you can train for the Private Pilot Licence (PPL) at a working airport, while Bodmin Airfield, out towards Bodmin Moor, is home to a flying club that teaches both the PPL and the Light Aircraft Pilot Licence (LAPL).
Out on the far west tip, Land’s End Airport at Kelynack near St Just has microlight training towards the NPPL in an Ikarus C42. Up on the north coast near St Agnes, Perranporth Airfield sits right on the cliffs and offers gliding with an instructor, which is a lovely way to try flying for the first time.
Wherever you start, you won’t be short of things to look at, from the Atlantic coast and St Michael’s Mount to the open moorland in the middle of the county.
Choosing a flight school in Cornwall
- Decide what you want to fly. Light aircraft, microlights and gliders all lead to different licences, and each school here focuses on one or two of them.
- Visit before you book. Look at the aircraft, meet the instructors and ask how many students they are training at the moment.
- Ask what the price includes. Aircraft hire, instructor time, landing fees, ground school and exam fees are often charged separately.
- Start with a trial lesson. It is the easiest way to find out whether a school and an instructor suit you. Most schools also sell gift vouchers.
