Arizona is one of the best places in the United States for a flying trip, with clear skies for most of the year and some of the most dramatic scenery you can fly over. The Phoenix area alone has six of the airports listed here, from Sky Harbor’s airline traffic to the busy training and business airports at Deer Valley, Scottsdale, Falcon Field and Chandler.

Phoenix–Mesa Gateway Airport, south-east of the city, handles airline, cargo and general aviation traffic, and Falcon Field in Mesa is a city-owned airport with a control tower and two runways. Tucson International serves the south of the state, and Yuma International, near the Mexican border, shares its runways with Marine Corps Air Station Yuma.

Head north and the airports climb with the land. Prescott Regional is at 5,045 ft and is the base for Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University’s Arizona campus. Sedona Airport sits on top of a red rock mesa at 4,830 ft, and Grand Canyon National Park Airport at Tusayan is a short drive from the South Rim. Page is the gateway to Lake Powell, Kingman is close to Route 66, and Show Low serves the White Mountains.

Planning a flying trip in Arizona

  • Watch the density altitude. Summer heat and high-elevation airports like Flagstaff, Grand Canyon, Prescott and Sedona can cut your aircraft’s climb performance a lot. Fly early in the day and check your performance figures.
  • Check the airspace around Phoenix and Tucson. Sky Harbor sits under Class B airspace, and there is military flying around Luke, Davis-Monthan and Yuma. Plan your route carefully.
  • Read up on the Grand Canyon rules. Special flight rules apply over Grand Canyon National Park, so check the current charts and FAA guidance before you go.
  • Carry plenty of water. Much of the state is remote desert, so plan fuel stops and take water and survival kit with you.

Frequently asked questions

What are the busiest general aviation airports in Arizona?

Around Phoenix, Deer Valley, Falcon Field, Scottsdale and Chandler all see a lot of training and private flying. Phoenix–Mesa Gateway and Tucson also have busy general aviation sides alongside their airline traffic.

Can I fly into the Grand Canyon?

Yes. Grand Canyon National Park Airport at Tusayan, near the South Rim, is open to private aircraft as well as air tour operators. Special flight rules apply over the national park itself, so check the FAA charts and guidance before you fly.

Which Arizona airports are at high elevation?

Flagstaff Pulliam is at 7,014 ft, Grand Canyon National Park Airport at 6,609 ft, Prescott at 5,045 ft and Sedona at 4,830 ft. Show Low in the White Mountains is high too, so always check density altitude in warm weather.
