Choosing a maintenance shop in North Carolina

  • Know who can sign off the work. In the US, an A&P mechanic can do most maintenance, an annual inspection needs an IA, and a Part 145 repair station works within the ratings on its certificate. Ask what applies to your job.
  • Match the shop to the job. Engine overhauls, propellers, avionics and NDT are often done by specialist shops, so you may use more than one business.
  • Ask about squawks before work starts. Agree how you will be told about extra findings and get a written estimate.
  • Keep the paperwork. Make sure logbook entries, Form 337s for major repairs or alterations and any STC paperwork come back with the aircraft.

Not sure what to ask? Read our guide on how to choose an aircraft maintenance shop or avionics installer.
