ATL Turbine Services repairs and refurbishes hot section gas turbine components at its site on Piper Street in Dundee. It describes itself as one of the UK’s leading independent component repair organisations and has been doing this work for over 30 years. Each year it returns many thousands of parts across 20 turbine types.

Repairing a part usually saves time, money and carbon compared with buying a new one. For many older turbines, new replacement parts are now very hard to find. ATL’s CARE programme covers coatings, assessment, repair and engineering, all in-house.

Customers can send parts uncleaned. ATL cleans them, carries out non-destructive testing and inspection, and sends a full report on what is needed to make each part serviceable. For deeper analysis, its laboratory uses scanning electron microscopy to look for cracks, flaws, contamination and corrosion.

Repairs include manual and automated TIG welding, material build-up, sectional replacement, vacuum heat treatment and vacuum brazing, backed by a coordinate measuring machine. The coating shop has four booths: two robotic air plasma, one robotic HVOF and one manual diffused coating booth. The robotic booths can coat parts of up to 250 kg and 1,200 mm in diameter.

ATL’s engineers can work to a customer’s own repair schemes or develop and validate new schemes for operators with no engineering department.
