Overview
The Irish Historic Flight Foundation (IHFF) preserves, operates and shares historic aircraft connected with Ireland’s aviation heritage. Established in 2014 and run entirely by volunteers, the Foundation is based at its own facility at Ballyboy Airfield in County Meath, near Athboy, which is home to its aircraft, its volunteers and its future visitor activity.
The IHFF works to the motto Preserve. Educate. Inspire. Rather than keeping aircraft as static exhibits, it keeps them flying as living machines, so visitors, supporters and young people can experience how design, engineering and skill shaped flight. The fleet in the Foundation’s care includes a Boeing Stearman, a Reims Rocket and a DHC-1 Chipmunk, each cared for and operated by volunteers with experience across aviation, engineering and aircraft maintenance.
Education is central to the Foundation’s mission. It aims to encourage future engineers, pilots and aviation professionals, and it is developing plans for a small STEM and heritage facility centred on its historic aircraft, combining heritage interpretation with hands-on learning about how aircraft fly and how they are maintained.
Ballyboy is an active airfield and is not open for general public access. Visits for meetings, events, volunteering or tours can be arranged in advance by contacting the IHFF team through the contact form on its website. The Foundation also welcomes donations, partnerships, sponsorship and new volunteers.
