Buying an aircraft in Ontario
- Get a pre-purchase inspection. Ask an independent approved maintenance organisation (AMO) or engineer you trust to inspect the aircraft and its records before you agree a price.
- Check the registration. Look the aircraft up on the Canadian Civil Aircraft Register and make sure the seller is the registered owner.
- Read the logbooks. Check the journey and technical logs, airworthiness directives, modifications and any damage history.
- Plan for an import. If the aircraft is in the US or elsewhere, allow time and budget for the export, import and registration paperwork.
- Check the rules for light aircraft. Ultralights, kit aircraft and gliders have their own rules on licences and maintenance, so check what applies with Transport Canada before you buy.
