Brief History
Opened in 1967 as a small GA strip, GCN exploded with tourism in the 1980s via Papillon, Maverick, and Grand Canyon Airlines—now flying over 600,000 passengers annually. The 1990s brought noise abatement rules (e.g., 1995 FAA “Quiet Technology” mandate) and a 1996 commercial flight ban to protect serenity. Today, it supports Essential Air Service via Contour Airlines (PHX–GCN) and remains a top global scenic flight hub. Named Arizona Airport of the Year in 2023.
