Brief History
Founded in 1928 as a dirt strip by Scenic Airways, PHX became a military base in WWII. American Airlines established a hub in 1983; British Airways launched LHR service in 1996. The 2020s brought $8B in upgrades—Terminal 3 South Concourse (2021), 8th Concourse (2024), and Sky Train Phase III (2025). Home to Southwest’s largest operation, American’s western hub, and FedEx’s #2 cargo hub. Named North America’s Best Large Airport by ACI in 2024.
