Nestled on the northeastern tip of the Isle of Wight, Bembridge Airport (IATA: BBP, ICAO: EGHJ) is a charming, unlicensed aerodrome that’s more than just a runway—it’s a slice of British aviation history wrapped in stunning coastal scenery. If you’re a pilot, avgeek, or simply someone who loves a quirky day out with a side of sea views, this spot offers a relaxed vibe far removed from the hustle of major hubs like Heathrow. Located about a mile southwest of the quaint village of Bembridge (coordinates: 50°40′41″N 001°06′34″W, elevation: 53 ft/16 m), it’s one of four airstrips on the island and one of two larger fields, with the other being Sandown Airport roughly four miles away. As of November 2025, it’s fully operational and welcoming visitors, making it an ideal gateway for exploring the Isle of Wight’s beaches, cliffs, and cycling trails.
A Storied Past: From Farm Field to Flying Legend:
Bembridge’s story begins humbly in 1920, when it opened on farmland owned by Bembridge Farm as a simple grass strip for early aviators. By 1934, it had evolved into a hub for commercial flights, with airlines like Spartan Airlines, Portsmouth Southsea, Isle of Wight Aviation, and Channel Air Ferries running scheduled services to spots like Bristol, Shoreham, and Heston. Imagine the buzz of pre-war travel—passengers hopping over the Solent for a day trip!
